21 Jump Street (2012)
(R) 109 mins

“We're reviving a canceled undercover project from the '80s and revamping it for modern times. The people behind this lack creativity and they've run out of ideas, so what they do now is just recycle shit from the past and hope that nobody will notice.”

The above joke pretty much sums up ’21 Jump Street.’ It’s not going for anything serious, it’s not going to be a simple remake of the original, it’s going for a self-referential satire full of guffaws. And for that, it succeeds greatly.

To put it succinctly, the film pairs a funny script with people perfectly suited for their roles. It allows Jonah Hill to be Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum to be Channing Tatum. That may not mean much to someone unfamiliar with his work, but he shows his comedic chops. It’s the supporting cast that solidifies it however. Ice Cube, Rob Riggle and Nick Offerman are only a few of the highlights that keep the laughs coming. I’m well aware that a dry recitation of what I enjoyed of a raucous comedy isn’t exactly going to wow people into seeing the film, but it is probably the funniest film of 2012.
