The Birdcage (1996)
(R) 117 mins

Can anyone tell me if Nathan Lane is gay or not? Yes, I know the character in the film is gay, and I heard that he’s gay…but I don’t know if he really is. Oh well. He sure can play a flamboyant guy though. So does that mean he’s gay? I dunno. Whatever.

‘The Birdcage’ is a riot. Lane is the main source of laughs, but he’s not the only one. Surprisingly, Robin Williams takes a back up role, as more of a genuine role instead of the over-the-top performance you’d expect. But a good amount of jokes come from Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest as Calista Flockhart’s conservative parents. So although the film is pretty much the same set-up throughout, it manages to do pretty much as much with it as you can imagine. And I’m givin props out to my boy Hank Azaria, who steals every scene he’s in. He’s Apu!
