Cyrus (2010)
(R) 91 mins

Take ‘The Office’ (please). Move the setting from Scranton to Los Angeles. Take away the faux-documentary style interviews. Replace the cast with John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill, Marisa Tomei and Catherine Keener. That pretty much sums up ‘Cyrus.’ It keeps a lot of the same style and camerawork of ‘The Office’ and retains the awkward-type humor.

John (John C. Reilly) is a depressed, middle-aged divorcee (can a man be a divorcee or is it just women?). He’s sweet, if oddly open. He clearly wears his heart on his sleeve in every scene. At a party, he meets Molly (Marisa Tomei), and the two hit it off immediately (if it is kind of an odd romance). Then, he meets her son Cyrus (Jonah Hill), who is weirdly close with his mother. Awkwardness ensues.

A lesser film would sell Cyrus as the only comedic character. Instead, we are treated to a small but very capable cast. It’s their interactions that make the film work. It’s the relationship between John and Cyrus that make it truly memorable.
