Inferno (2016)
(PG-13) 121 mins

At this point, there seems to be a formula of sorts to Dan Brown novels and films. There’s a mysterious and nebulous villain, his nefarious lackey, a love interest of sorts, a historical figure with secrets, and professor Robert Langdon following a ridiculous set of clues to stop a plot. It’s an odd formula, but it seems to work for profitable films and best selling novels.

‘Inferno’ hews closely to that formula – to a point. There’s a couple twists midway through that genuinely threw me off. Perhaps it’s my familiarity with the material, but I was taken aback a bit. Of course, the rest of the film is largely what you’d expect. To be honest, it’s one of the more ridiculous Dan Brown plotlines I’ve seen – the character motivations make little sense in retrospect. But the variety of film locales and the aforementioned twists make it worthwhile - albeit just barely.
