The Lego Movie (2014)
(PG) 100 mins

Everything is awesome! Everything is cool when you’re part of a team! Everything is awesome, when we’re living our dream! Sorry, that is one of the catchiest song’s I’ve ever heard and it’s featured throughout ‘The Lego Movie.’ So, it’s gonna be stuck in my head for the next several months. You’ve been warned.

The parts of the film that aren’t devoted solely to singing that song (which is, yes, most of it) are, well, awesome. The first thing you must think of upon learning a film is animated with legos is how difficult such an undertaking must be. And it shows on the screen. Several scenes show thousands of legos in various forms. Do I need to capitalize Legos? I don’t know. Obviously, these weren’t hand placed, and are computer generated. But it is almost awe-inspiring to see gigantic buildings and oceans comprised of legos.

But the bottom line is (and I’ve said this before), the point of a film is to tell a story. And the makers of the film don’t forget that. Suffice it to say, it’s a story that can only take place in a lego universe. And it has one of the best voiced cast in recent memory. Charlie Day is at his best as an enthusiastic astronaut (straight from a circa 1985 lego set). Will Arnett is simply hilarious as a douchey Batman. Morgan Freeman plays (who else?) a wise leader who imparts his wisdom on Emmet, the main character. And that brings me to the real highlight of the film, Chris Pratt, who plays the main character. He basically plays the same character as on Parks & Recreation (Thursday nights on NBC!), an overly earnest sort of doofus. There is no one better alive who can belt out the words, “Everything is awesome!!” and mean it.
