Modern Times (1936)
(Unrated) 87 mins

Simply stated, ‘Modern Times’ is a collection of some of the best Charlie Chaplin bits. For those of you unfamiliar with Mr. Chaplin, he’s unarguably the most gifted physical comedian ever caught on film. How gifted exactly? Well, he was the only person to continue making silent films after the invention of “talkies.” ‘Modern Times’ was one of them. And it continually is mentioned as one of the funniest movies ever made.

That in and of itself should be enough to merit seeing it. But I’ll point out a few timeless Chaplin bits: as a night watchman in the department store; as a singing waiter in a crowded restaurant; as a captive in the prison cafeteria; and the unforgettable opening scene in the factory. To those of you who are unfamiliar with the film, the previous sentence probably means nothing. But those of you who have seen it, those scenes remain indelible and won’t be soon forgotten.
