Night at the Roxbury (1998)
(PG-13) 81 mins

I have to say I’m none too happy with the existence of the SNL skit with the two night club dudes. It ruined Haddaway’s “What is Love”, one of my favorite songs. Now, whenever I mention the song, instead of talking about the song, everyone just talks about the SNL skit or the movie. Boo SNL. Booo.

The film is (duh) an adaptation of the SNL skit. Unfortunately, there’s never been anything more than two idiots at a nightclub. In fact, each skit has the aforementioned song blaring throughout. There’s little (if any dialogue). I won’t lie; I thought the skit was funny. But to stretch it out into a feature length, 90-minute film? I dunno.

And my misgivings prove accurate, as the film is nothing more than a collection of sparse gags, none of which are related. I will admit that I did laugh at times, but as a whole it’s quite obvious there’s not really a good script; one was merely cobbled together to take advantage of the popularity of the skit. The film feels very uneven, and never really finds its footing. Furthermore, aside learning that the two are brothers, they really offer nothing new to the characters. Perhaps the next SNL adaptation will learn from that mistake, but as far as this one goes? Don’t waste your time.
