Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
(PG) 115 mins

‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ is a watershed in filmmaking. It’s undoubtedly one of the greatest action films ever made. But this brings about quite an irony: it probably has had the most adverse effect on films than any other film in history. Why? It’s the birth of the action hero film. Yes, you could argue that James Bond was the first action hero film series, but the Bond series is a genre in itself. Indiana Jones was the first true action hero, and after its release, many producers attempted to emulate them. As a result, we have Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and endless films from the likes of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Segal, Chuck Norris, Vin Diesil and any and all such films like that. This film did more to dumb down movies than any other film that’s come along prior or since.

But I digress. As I stated above, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ is one of the greatest action films ever made. Harrison Ford continues in the gruff, arrogant hero mold (remember Han Solo?) to create the timeless character of Indiana Jones. His goal? To recover the ark of the covenant before the hated Nazis do so and take over World War II. With all the action and intrigue, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ becomes one of the most fun movies ever made.
