Tootsie (1982)
(PG) 119 mins

Ah, the timeless tale of a man dressing up as a woman. It hearkens (ooh, vocab) back to the days of Shakespeare, yet it’s still funny today. Tom Hanks did it, Robin Williams did it, Bob Hope did it, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis did it. They’ve all dressed up in drag for laughs. And now Dustin Hoffman did it.

That being said, ‘Tootsie’ isn’t as much about the comedic aspect of cross-dressing, though it is funny. It’s done more as character development (as strange as that sounds). Hoffman dresses up as a woman to land a role in a soap opera, but instead of augmenting his ego, he learns to restrain it and learns how to better work with others. Okay, so that sounds incredibly boring, but it’s the journey there that makes it worthwhile. That and watching Hoffman struggle to make the charade work with his girlfried (Teri Garr), his roommate (the always fantastic Bill Murray), and the woman he loves (Jessica Lange). Not to mention gems like this: (to cameraman) “I’d like to make her (Hoffman) more attractive. How far can you pull back?” “How’s Cleveland?”
