In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, global warming has once again become a major issue. According to climatologists (people who study the climate), hurricanes occur only in the summer/fall because of the warmer water. So, warmer water increases the degree to which hurricanes occur. Hence, why they only occur in the late summer, when the water temperature is at its highest.
That being as it is, global warming has raised its head as an issue with the last hurricane. Climatologists claim that as a result of the warmer temperatures in recent years, hurricanes have gotten worse and occurred more frequently. Republican politicians do not believe that global warming exists. Let me reiterate that with emphasis. CLIMATOLOGISTS believe that as a result of the warmer temperatures in recent years, hurricanes have gotten worse and occurred more frequently. REPUBLICAN POLITICIANS do not believe that global warming exists. Hmmmm…who should I trust more? Dr. Steven Schneider, who has a PhD from Columbia in Climatology, who says, ‘global warming has caused hurricanes to get progressively worse in recent years,’ or Ben Stein, who is best known for being Richard Nixon’s speechwriter and game show host, who says that ‘there is no clear-cut evidence that global warming even exists…(or that) it makes hurricanes more powerful.’
But the sad thing is, more people will listen to the political science major than the climatology major. They research climate for a living! They’d know better than anyone else! And what’s even sadder than that is that any Republican who reads this will immediately dismiss the climatologist, and me, as it doesn’t agree with their worldviews. I guess I better get used to it as long as Bush is president.
