Recently, House Republicans blocked a bill that would implement the recommendations made by the 9/11 commission. Yes, thatís right. A bill that was passed by a 96-2 vote in the Senate was blocked by GOP representatives.
For a brief moment, letís go back to the Republican convention. I believe the theme was the attacks of September 11th, and how it changed the face of America. Fast forward a few weeks to the ads that came out supporting the President, depicting terrorists as wolves, and how we need to protect ourselves.
Fast forward to today. The 9/11 commission worked tirelessly for the better part of a year to determine precisely what happened in the months leading up to September 11th. After reviewing those events, they made recommendations in order to prevent such a disaster from happening again.
So why are some Republicans opposed to this measure? These are the same people who were telling us that we have to do whatever we can to stop terrorists (including a pre-emptive strike on a sovereign nation). This is a fail-safe measure for the further prevention of terrorist attacks approved by a bipartisan commission. Trying to block such a measure is nothing more than resistance to change. And regarding how much change Republicans feel is necessary to combat terrorism, opposition to the bill is blatant hypocrisy.
